They keep them next to the earthquake machines and orbital lasers.

It's clear you're not aware of a lot of things. A plane can be damaged from a SAM at high altitudes and crash dozens of miles from where it was hit. To the simpleton farmer on the ground nearby, it sure would look like there were no guns fired.

The F-117A in Kosovo was similar. It was damaged by a SAM but crashed dozens of miles from impact because it was hard to control.

          • That would explain why there are no Libyan claims to have shot it down.

It may very well be a mechanical failure. I just wouldn't trust the word of the military, which would be tremendously embarrassed if the rag-tag forces in Libya could bring down one of their strike fighters. There was an F-15 training flight crash a couple years back, so it's possible the F-15s are simply as reliable as Fords and Chevys.

BTW, the fact that the pilots were so spread out also indicates a high-altitude incident. Which would mean the chances of farmers on the ground from seeing/hearing what happened is pretty small. It also means the chance of it being a mechanical failure was smaller as there was clearly no attempt to recover from it, so if it was a mechanical failure it must have been catastrophic. Maybe the engine exploded -- but you're right, that's not possible -- the farmer didn't hear anything.

                    • I wonder if it's possible that Libyan communications have been disrupted with the attacks on their command and control centres.

It's highly likely that the Libyan command has no ****ing idea what's happening at their various sites. After all, that is the whole purpose of the coalition attacks.

Of course they would. The government can do no wrong, which is precisely why Republicans are huge into big government.

                          • Wezil: Is it outside the realm of possibility it was shot down? No. Right now, is the shot down theory more likely than mechanical failure? Baring more evidence coming to light, mechanical failure is looking like the culprit here. Asher's trollish comments aren't evidence.

I didn't ask whether you thought it was shot down.
